Field Trip Experience

Educational Field Trips

Helping Hands Produce hosts educational field trips at Davis Ranch in Sloughhouse, California, between May and October annually.  Students need to arrive 15 minutes before the scheduled field trip.  Use sun protection. Dress in long pants. Wear tennis shoes that can get dirty. No flip-flops or high heels in the fields. These are approximately two to three hour events.

Learn to Pick Ripe Crops

Students are given the opportunity to pick, taste, harvest and glean surplus fruits and vegetable which are sent to local food banks.

Picnic Time

There is a picnic area at the Davis Ranch Produce Stand, for teachers who want the class to eat on site after the trip. Students or teachers need to provide the meal for a picnic.

Preparing for the Field Trip

Upon arrival at the Davis Ranch Sloughhouse Corn Stand, students learn about a farm year and farming practices (how the soil is prepared, planted, cultivated, irrigated and harvested). Regional history and geography are covered explaining why the area’s soil is so rich. Students are shown what a healthy plant should look like and what makes it healthy and able to produce abundant crops. The nutritional benefit of eating healthy fruits and vegetables is the strong focal point. The field trip also connects the concept of sowing and reaping from the farm to daily life situations students will face while at home and school. Students are given a tractor trailer ride or walking farm tour (depending on tractor availability). Students are shown different crops growing in fields and are given the opportunity to pick a small amount of various kinds of produce. The guide speaks about:

• Farming surplus, the concept of gleaning

• The nutritional and health benefits of eating delicious fresh fruits and vegetables

• Sowing and Reaping

Take Home Boxes

Each student is able to leave with a standard produce box (20-25 pounds) filled with fresh fruit and vegetables picked that morning to share with his/her family. This is one of the highlights of the program.
